The personalities of our coworkers can often make or break the job. I've had jobs that I really liked but coworkers that I didn't like so much; if it wasn't for the fact that I liked the work I would have quit right away. On the other hand, sometimes you don't have a choice about it, especially if you need the money. What's worse is if you work a job you dislike with people you dislike, but you can't quit because you can't afford to.
Funny I came across this today. I'm currently in this dilemma, and trying to go back to my old job which is something I didn't realize I love with people I didn't realize I would miss as much as I do. After a year of working in an awful and unprofessional excuse for a company, I've learned that while your career shouldn't become your life, in the US, all of our emphasis is placed on work. And if you don't like what you are doing, and enjoy (or at least find tolerable) the people you work with, you WILL be miserable.
The second. They make even work you don't like pleasant. Unfortunately, I'm in the other situation - doing work I *used* to like with people I don't anymore. So, you see, even work I liked is now something that has become tedious and monotonous.People matter ... always.
I have done both, and I'll tell you what, awesome people can make a shitty job much more fun. That being said, there's a limit in both directions. Awesome people can make an annoying or tedious part of a job bearable, but if you HATE what you're doing no amount of awesome people can make that better. At the same time, dicks can DESTROY an awesome job. I'm lucky enough to have good amounts of both.
That's a real tough question you asked. Well if I had to choose ill choose work but ill try to like the people there. And vice versa :)
Tough one. Balance, always balance. If it's too negative either way, it can make you start nitpicking at the positive one, and then guess what can happen?
I don't know, actually. I've been lucky enough to always have to work with people I like a lot, except one time I disliked most of my co-workers, but I had to work with them for so little time that my excitement for a job I loved saved me from being miserable.
Anyway, I tend to throw myself into work when I'm passionate about it, so I suppose I could "survive" in a not-so-pleasant company. Being forced to do something I hate, on the other hand, well I think it wouldn't work for me at all, even if I love everyone I work with.
I mean, I have friends I can talk to in the evening, complaining to them about I much I dislike my co-workers and they would make me happy. On the other hand, nice co-workers couldn't give me back my dream job.
Obviously, it was HOW much, not I much :D I'm sorry.
I'd rather have good work. Hopefully, I could lose myself in my work if I didn't like the people. If not, then out comes the iPod. :-)
I like it! I like it a lot. You know exactly what youre talking about, exactly where other people are coming from on this issue. Im glad that I had the fortune to stumble across your blog. Its definitely an important issue that not enough people are talking about and Im glad that I got the chance to see all the angles.
I came in search of a fresh post but thoroughly enjoyed reading this one, which is written with color, flair, and feeling.
The truth is both of those situations are terrible. In my first job I disliked the work but could fairly tolerate my colleagues and I thought I was in hell, for 9 hours a day and 5 days a week, so I left for a job I thought I would love. One year later, I wish I was back at my old job because it allowed flexibility to do other work and my colleagues were supportive, something I can't say about my current job. So I would choose to work with people I get along with, even if the job isn't that great.

If 2 out of 3 or good, you should stay; 1 out of 3, you should probably look for something else.
In my case, I have great coworkers but don't get paid much at all and no longer enjoy the work. But it's hard when it's the coworkers are keeping you at your job. In my case, I can't imagine finding better coworkers. But in my case, I'd take better work and pay for somewhat less stellar coworkers.

I'd rather do work that I like. This question was raised recently at an Orlando, Florida meeting that I attended. The answers varied until we got back to the Orlando Hotel. Then people thought about it and some changed their answers; as it raises an interesting point.
