What's In Your Closet?

by Lawyer Working Girl

Hey Working Girls guess what? Spring is here! Do you feel it yet? I have definitely gotten a case of spring fever! Are the days getting warmer where you live? By the way, real big sorry to those of you still getting snow this time of year - eek!

This change in weather sometimes makes picking out what to wear to work difficult. And since I walk to work I have to pay particularly close attention to the weather. Some days I want to wear a skirt or a dress, but it's not quite cold enough for tights and not quite warm enough for bare legs. Other days, it will be warm during the day and borderline cold in the evenings on my walk home, so I have to be sure to carry a jacket or coat. I long for the summer where I just have to deal with warm days and warm nights.

There is one thing though that keeps running through my mind each morning as I'm looking through my closet and trying to decide what to wear: it's time to go shopping. I feel like it's time for a brand new work wardrobe.

Some of my shirts are too small and some pants are too tight. I've got so many suits that I used to wear to court everyday that I don't even wear anymore. At my current job, I never wear suits to work. In fact, I don't think I've had a reason to wear a suit in almost 2 years! Also, I sometimes feel like I'm wearing the same things over and over again. It is definitely time for some new clothes!

As I sit down to make my list of must have pieces (cardigan, button down shirt, light gray pants, etc.), I would love your help Working Girls in figuring out some essential pieces for a new spring/summer work wardrobe. Also what are some fun colors that you plan to incorporate into your work wardrobe for the spring and summer?

Wardrobe Malfunction

Tomorrow, I leave for a business trip. This evening, I've been packing for said business trip. I've discovered that I hate all of my clothes. Okay, not all of them. But most of them.

I had a business trip last week which, for the most part, was rather casual and therefore easy. In packing for this trip, I've become increasingly frustrated with my clothing.

The problem, I think, is that I haven't taken the time to develop my wardrobe. When I first began working, I invested in a few quality items. The rest were all from lower end stores that were very affordable but low in quality. Three years later, I still have and wear some of these clothes and every time I wear them to work I hate them and I have the "I hate how I look, how could I put together such an awful outfit" feeling all day. Some of these things have really got to go.

I also haven't taken good care of some of the more quality items I have. Items that should be dry cleaned, don't get dry cleaned. Items that should be hand washed get sent out for wash and fold. What I'm left with are half ruined pieces of clothing. No one wants that.

Now, I'm making some shopping/clothing resolutions for myself:
  1. Stop purchasing cheap (in quality) items.
  2. Take inventory of what I have so that when I shop I know what I need and what outfits I can put together.
  3. Purchase more quality items that I'll wear for a while.
  4. Take care of said quality items.
Once I get these resolutions going, my next step is learn how to accessorize. I love buying accessories but hate wearing them. I always feel like I look foolish.

Working Girl Wardrobe: The Interview

You have finally gotten a call back after sending out about 40 resumes a week. You've impressed them with your background and your degrees (and all those stellar extra circulars that you just knew would eventually pay off - and no I'm not talking about how fast you can shotgun a beer). Now it's time to impress them with your wardrobe.

It's the age-old question. What is appropriate to wear to a work interview?

According to this New York Times' article, when thinking about your interview wardrobe you should "err on the side of conservatism". And I definitely concur. If you do not know much about the company you are interviewing at (aka if it's conservative or if it's casual), then you should always wear the most formal outfit in your closet.

Formal for us Working Girls means a suit - this can be a pants suit or a skirt suit. I personally favor the skirt suit - there's something about a pants suit that makes me feel like a linebacker. The pros suggest wearing low heels and hosiery.

There is always an exception to the rule however. The creative world is always a little less dressy. I have a friend who works at an ad agency and she could wear sweats to work if she really wanted to. At a company like this, it's definitely acceptable to show up in a more relaxed version of a suit. For example, when I interviewed at a luxury magazine when I wanted to be an intern in NYC, I wore bermuda shorts, a nice sweater, and low heels. And I scored the job. Later I found out that it was down to me and another girl who showed up in a full on pants suit and she seemed just too conservative for the job. They wanted someone more fun who liked clothes (and could therefore write about them).

It's important to know who is going to be judging you. But if you're unsure, always stick with the suit. Looking more professional is never a bad thing!

This outfit combination would be perfect for a more casual interview - perfect if you're in the creative world! (Or in magazines!). And always remember to bring a notebook - coming prepared will look kindly on you in the long run.

These pearl tones are more conservative and perfect for a job interview where you don't know your audience as well as you might like. The only thing I would change would probably be a more sensible heel. At most job interviews (if they like you), they will have you meet with multiple people and walking around the office like you're drunk because you didn't think those heels could hurt this bad, can look unkindly on you.

I also think a nice (and conservative) dress is appropriate for us Working Girls to wear to an interview. Keep in mind though that you should not be showing off too much boobage or too much leg. We don't want the boss to get the wrong idea and therefore slash you from the competition completely.

And don't forget to wear panty hose!

Working Girl Wears: Help!

Now is that time of year in New York where one day it's 66 degrees and sunny and the next it's 38 degrees and raining. In addition to putting my sinuses through a roller coaster ride it's making getting dressed incredibly difficult.

If I have to wear tights one more time I might hurt someone but I'm too lazy to pull my summer clothes from out of closet and from under my bed. I need a little early spring wardrobe inspiration. I'm hoping you can help me.

Send me your favorite early spring outfit ideas. Pictures of you in them or something from Polyvore. Let me know if it's okay to post them next week.

Do Not Wear Disney Clothing To Work

This week has been crazy busy (and I was seriously bummed when I found out it was Wednesday and not Thursday - isn't that the worst?). And sometimes when I'm crazy busy or just plain tired, I don't make sense when I speak, I forget what I'm talking about halfway through conversations, and essentially become brain dead. Thankfully, I am still able to put together a sentence when writing e-mails otherwise I wouldn't be able to communicate.

So this morning when I was running around printing 100 copies of a worksheet for a training session and making sure the 20 people who my company is taking to Key West next week all had their jet ski tours and deep sea fishing trips booked, I walked over to the copier and saw our legal assistant wearing a Disney pullover.

And I did a double take.

Mainly I did said double take because I was so delrious that I thought, 'Ok, now we can add hallucinating to the Tired WG2 Brain Dead Snydrome'.

But no, my eyes had not deceived me. The legal assistant was wearing a white fleece pullover with Winnie the Pooh on it. And the best part...she was wearing it with white leggings circa 1992 (which I'm pretty sure I also owned and wore at the wee age of seven).

This picture of a Minnie sweatshirt is a marked improvement over what our legal assistant was wearing. Yea, think about that. Sending shivers down your spine?

So my question is how did she get up in the morning and think this outfit choice was ok? Sure it's comfortable...for a Saturday afternoon spent on your couch (because yes I'm guilty of wearing some pretty gross ensembles while lazily lounging around my apartment)! But for a professional day of copying documents and manning the phones? Sorry, I think not. What if a client saw her dressed like that? In Disney attire...most likely purchased at a theme park! This is a working fashion don't if I have ever heard of one.

And sadly, I don't think I will ever be able to take the legal assistant seriously ever again. Because she wore a pullover that made me dry heave.

My advice to all Working Girls is this: Do not wear Disney themed clothing to work. Ever. If for nothing else, so you don't make your co-workers dry heave.

What a Working Girl Wants

I'm over winter. So totally and completely over winter. It's cold out. And it's windy and it's snowing. My skin is dry. And my shampoo, which sits on the windowsill of the window in the shower, froze today. I'm over winter.

The window displays at The Gap are now screaming "SPRING" at me as I walk by everyday. I was planning on doing some serious winter sale shopping with my Christmas money but then I needed a root canal and that is costing me. So, instead of added some much needed pieces to my winter wardrobe, I'm day dreaming of a new spring one. Here are just a few things I'm looking at to get me in the spring mood!

Polka-dot dress - Anthropologie

Brown Sandals - Steve Madden at Piperlime

Red raincoat - Old Navy

White Jeans - AG at Shopbop

Surviving The Great Depression of 2008

Times are getting tough for everyone with the financial crisis. Working Girls and Boys are cutting back on food, clothes and entertainment. But a girls gotta eat, look nice at work and after a long hard day, a girl needs a drink. Here are a few tips to survive the financial crisis without becoming a hungry, poorly dressed hermit.

Entertainment
Movies in Manhattan are $12. Add popcorn and a soda and that's at least $20. Per person! One cocktail costs anywhere from $10 - $15. Other cities are cheaper but still more expensive than we Working Girls would like. Drinking with friends at your apartment is a great savvy choice for having fun and saving money. Some of my favorite moments with my friends are around a table, drinking wine and playing cards. Easy. Cheap. Fun.

Or, just do the college thing when going out. Get your drink on at home then go to the bar and nurse a fun cocktail. And if we're going to get all college here, I'll have a Vodka 180.

Food
Eat less! Just kidding.

My mother has been clipping coupons for as long as I can remember. I tried using coupons at one point in college but I ended up purchasing items I never ate or didn't even like and therefore, didn't save any money. Now that I (a) moved to the city where I pay an absurd amount of money on groceries and (b) am penny pitching out of fear of a great depression, I'm back to clipping coupons. In addition to finding coupons in the Sunday paper, try visiting your favorite food brands websites for coupons or special offers. Coupons.com also has a number of savings on brand name grocery items.

I recently checked my online banking to see how much money I spent a week at my work cafeteria. I found that I was spending $45 to $60 a week on breakfast and lunch. That's a new shirt or a weeks worth of groceries (if I have a lot of coupons). Last week, I brought breakfast everyday and lunch four times. It's not as glamorous as purchasing sushi from the cafeteria but I'd rather save the money for dinner with friends.

Speaking of dinner with friends, that's not so cheap either. For me, that's due to alcohol. A month or so ago, two girlfriends and I opted for a quaint French BYOB in the West Village. The food at Tartine was reasonably priced and because we brought our own wine three of us had dinner (with an appetizer), dessert and two bottles of wine for about $80. Which is almost unheard of for a nice meal in Manhattan.

Clothes
My working wardrobe is in dire need of a makeover. I have one pair of pants to get me through the fall of winter and I'm already wearing them once a week. In a prefect world, I had own enough dresses to wear one everyday and only have a repeat or two each month. But in a prefect world there probably wouldn't be a financial crisis to begin with.

You already know how much WG2 and I love bargain shopping at places like Target and H&M. It's time to add a few more stores to our go-to list:

UNIQLO is the Japanese hybrid of American Apparel and H&M. With lots of basics (in lots of colors and styles), sweaters, jeans, dresses and a few fun pieces at reasonable prices I think I might just start making the trip from The Upper East Side to SoHo a little more often.

TopShop is what my friends in the UK swore by when they studied abroad and stuck using the Euro or the Pound. Prices have gone up over the past few years but it's still cheaper than designer duds. TopShop is coming stateside something this fall with a store opening in SoHo. The opening has been postponed but you can get your fix now that items can be purchased at US prices online.

Working Girl Wardrobe: Fall Favorites

It is October and it has just begun to feel like fall in NYC. I have been particularly giddy about the change in weather patterns because I get to wear my new fall coat that I picked up at The Gap on sale a few weeks back. It's grey and oh so gorgeous and makes me a feel like a Working Girl who could defeat the world (all good coats should make you feel that way).

Fall means that I can hide my bumps with big sweaters, long pants, and awesome jackets that make you feel like a superwoman. But fall also means that I'm gonna have to start drying my hair in the mornings which makes me a little unhappy. But on the up side, I might actually start looking like a human being at work!

So in honor of fall, here are two outfits that I am immediately going to purchase. Everything featured are from my favorite "save me money" stores Forever 21, Old Navy, and Target.

I am recently loving on purple and according to WG1 it is the go-to color of the season. I am also really into rings lately - big and gaudy is my motto. Brings a little bit of flair into my day-to-day outfits.

While this outfit is on the verge of being "too wintery", I still love it. My wardrobe is all about grey, black and red this fall.

Omigosh do I just love autumn and hot chocolate and apple cider and hay stacks and leaves!

Working Girl Watches: Project Runway

Are you in or are you out?

"Project Runway": I'm in!
Last night's "Lipstick Jungle" challenge: I'm out! And so is WG2.

Last winter, both ABC and NBC filled the void of the writers strike with short seasons of two Working Girl shows, "Cashmere Mafia" and "Lipstick Jungle," respectively. As two girls who love television, WG2 and I were beyond excited about these work-related dramedies.

"Cashmere Mafia" was everything I wanted it to be and more. As I said in January, "Cashmere Mafia" makes me want to take on the business world in a couture dress and 4-inch heels. Lipstick Jungle was the complete opposite. As WG2 said in February, "I don't have "Lipstick Jungle" fever."

Needless to say, we were completely dumbfounded as to why "Cashmere Mafia" was cancelled and "Lipstick Jungle" was not. I'm still hoping that ABC is playing a joke on us and bringing back Mia, Zoe, Juliet, and Caitlin. As unrealistic as their lives were, they inspired me to work hard and focus on my career. And, bottom line, it was fun! The "Lipstick Jungle" ladies made me depressed and convinced me that if I become a career woman I'll be alone for the rest of my life. Who wants to believe that? Even if it could be the reality.

However, last night's episode of "Project Runway" made me rethink my hatred of "Lipstick Jungle." How can a Working Girl hate Brooke Shields? She's definitely a Working Girl Idol.

September 24th, when "Lipstick Jungle" premieres, I'm going to give it another chance, another try. At the very least, I'm going to watch for Keith's sexy outfit:

Working Girl Wardrobe: cityclips

Proving that twenty-something's are taking over the world, here is my new "must-have" for the upcoming fall season - cityclips - a new stylish and oh-so-cute accessory and the brain child of a twenty-something Working Girl. cityclips are an accessory specifically designed to keep Working Girl's long slacks and pant cuffs from dragging on the narsty, gritty streets of NYC without having to resort to stuffing your pants in your boots or picking up your pants and wading through that flood on your way to happy hour.

If you can't follow my diatribe above (sorry, it's been a long day), here's the condensed version:

Problem: most work pants are hemmed to be worn with high heels.
Another problem: most Working Girls wear flats on their commute to work.
Solution: cityclips.

Here's how they work. You buy a pair of these stylish cityclips, roll up your pant cuffs, clip on two cityclips to either the sides of your pant cuffs or the back heel area (note: these can be worn in a multitude of different ways, which makes me giggle with excitement). The best part - the cityclips are made with magnets so ultimately you're not ruining a pair of pants by using these god-sends - you're actually helping preserve them!

Ok, so I admit, my black pants aren’t designer-made (admittedly, they’re from Target, but if you say Target with a French accent then it automatically makes them cost $50 more than you bought them for), but that doesn’t mean I don’t want them dragging or fraying. Even though they’re cheap, I still expect them to last longer than six months. So once I get my next paycheck, I am totally shelling out the $36 to buy a pair of these cityclips.

Now I just have to decide what design I want. My biggest dilemma of the day, whether I should get the large nautical anchor cityclips or the pearl cityclips.

Or splurge and buy both. I vote both.

To Blow Dry or Not To Blow Dry

I rarely look good for work. I think it's because I stopped trying around month three when I realized that there were no eligible men at work and after I saw The CEO wear a diamond-bedazzled skull and crossbones sweatshirt to work for the first time. I mean, if The CEO can wear a studded zip-up that promotes death then I think I can scale it down for my day-to-day wardrobe.

This lack of trying has made me commit many a Working Girl fashion faux pas. For instance, I don't wait for causal Friday to wear jeans. I wear the bare minimum of make-up (bronzer, cover-up and blush thanks). I wear flip flops once my heels start to make my feet ache. And I've even worn a sweatshirt to work (to be fair, it was really, really cold out and I was hungover).

My latest lazy wardrobe no-no has been wet hair. I had never really thought that wet hair at work was really a big no-no until recently when a work friend of mine admitted she felt guilty coming to the office with dripping hair. And let me tell you, I'm the queen of wet hair. In a bun, in a ponytail, still waiting to dry wavy hair. If wet hair is a crime they should carry me off to jail today since I commit this one at least three-four times a week.

So my question of the moment: should I care more and blow dry my hair?

For instance, today I was supposed to have a meeting with a client. They cancelled at the last minute and I was so angry because I had dressed up today. I can tell when I truly look nice when my co-workers actually comment on my appearance. My favorite today was, "Omg, WG2, you wore make-up today!" - sadly, they were right. I really did it up today. I wore a nice dress, nice shoes, cute headband, and I even put on eyeliner. And the client cancels. I was pissed because when they reschedule for later in the week I'm going to have to look nice again - more than once in one week!

That's when I realized that I was mad at a client not because I was all ready to go with my great presentation or because we had to reschedule for the third time. No, I was mad because I would have to look pretty again (maybe even on a Friday). Wow. I have let myself go.

So this is my pledge to try a little harder not because I want The Boss to notice or to catch the eye of a Working Boy. I'm doing this one for me.

And personally, I just decided that wet hair during the months of June, July and August is totally acceptable. Using a blow dryer in this heat? Brutal.

Working Girl Wardrobe: Glasses

Dorothy Parker once said, "Men seldom make passes at girls who wear glasses." While I might not agree with this statement (you're talking to a girl who has been called 'four eyes' since the fifth grade), I do think glasses make a Working Girl look all the more professional.

Take these classic tortoiseshell glasses for instance. These little suckers are the glasses that grace my face day in and day out. Do I think they make me look more like a pro than a schmo? I have to admit, when I'm wearing a pencil skirt and a cute top, these can make me feel like I could woo any client.

These playful and colorful glasses are all sunshine and lollipops. Sure to brighten any boardroom.

Ferragamo. Prada. Versace. Designer glasses are like the little black dress of eye wear. And these Bulgari rimless frames spell out sexy secretary to me.

Blast from the past eye wear can also spice up a boring black suit. And they're cheap to boot. Buy these throwbacks to the '50's from RetroPlanet.com for $5.99. The price tag might make you even consider to order these without even needing them to read your notes from your latest meeting.

And with the right eye wear, a Working Girl might not get Working Boys to make passes but I'm sure they could get Working Men to make moves.

Excuse Me, Your Spanx Are Showing

I dropped my laundry off for wash & fold on Sunday. I hadn't done laundry in about two weeks, thus limiting my clothing choices until I had time to pick my $18.00 worth of wash & fold at 8:55 tonight, right before closing.

Monday, I wore my Working Girl best for an event at work with a popular fashionista (more on that later this week). This morning, I didn't have any clean cami's and I ran out of comfortable underwear three days ago.

That left me this:

Yes, it's cute, but not for work. A navy dress that I probably should have realized was too short for work, a brown wrap, and brown boots. Oh and Spanx because of the whole no-clean-underwear thing (if you look closely, you can see them). Being a Spanx virgin, I figured you're supposed to wear them without underwear, right? There is no way a pair of underwear would fit between all that Lycra and my tush. I also figured that because I was wearing a short dress the short-like Spanx would make me feel more comfortable. Not the case.

Walking to the bus stop, I began to feel self-conscience. The Spanx felt funny and I noticed how short my dress actual
ly is as it flew up in the wind. It didn't end there. All day I felt awkward and more and more self-conscience. I pulled my dress down as much as I could each time I got up from my desk. I checked to be sure my Spanx weren't showing every minute as I walked around the office. Every time I went to the bathroom I asked whoever was in there if they thought my dress was too short. They said "no," I'm pretty sure they were lying. All my assistant friends knew I was having a bad clothing day (and bad hair day, but that's another story).

I should probably point out that then men in my office, all five of them, are uber awkward and I felt more awkward in my outfit in front of them. It didn't help that four of the men have desks or offices within a two-yard radius of my desk. I'm pretty sure at least one of them caught me adjusting my Spanx when I thought no one was looking. I was seriously contemplating taking them off, it's not like I haven't done it before. I couldn't wait for the day to be over. But before it was over, I had to have a meeting with my two bosses (male boss and female boss).

I was asked in the early afternoon by my male boss if I could meet with them both at five. Having no idea what they wanted to talk about and knowing that they just had a department status meeting about improving the department, I was nervous. Promptly at five, Female Boss called me into her office with Male Boss. I grabbed my notebook and pen (I never go anywhere without those two items) and sat down in her office.

"Ok, this isn't a scary meeting," Female Boss said.

"Oh, good," I nervously giggled.

"Actually," Male Boss began, "we wanted to know who said you could wear that type of outfit to work?"

I was mortified and it definitely showed. But before I could lift my chin off the floor and pull my dress over my knees, Female Boss informed me that he was kidding. He was, I think. Or I thought. Until I started writing this post, I thought he was kidding. But the more I think about Male Boss and his sense of humor and the things I've heard him say to my co-workers (for example: "What's with your hair? Are you sure that's the color you asked for?"), I'm realizing that he was at least 35% serious about my outfit.

It turned out that our meeting was about my work load and future responsibilities, not my short navy dress and Spanx (more about that meeting later).

Working Girl Wardrobe: Summer Fridays

It's finally Memorial Day Weekend! WG2 left last night for the Jersey Shore and I leave tomorrow morning. And no, it is not like True Life: I'm a Jersey Shore Girl, at least not all the time.

Summer Fridays were announced yesterday which means I get four Friday's off between Memorial Day and Labor Day. This morning I found out we get to leave at three o'clock today. While I was hoping for one o'clock, I'll take three, it's better than five. Much better than five.

The summer season is much more casual in the office. I can hang up my go-to black pants until fall and pull out my summer skirts and dresses. Here in New York it's not quite warm enough to leave the apartment without a light jacket, but we're getting there. Here is my perfect (early) summer Friday outfit.

The Stiletto Glamazons

All my friends can attest to the fact that I am an impulse shopper. I see something I like and I usually end up buying it. I can't help myself (especially if you set me loose in Target).

I'm even worse really bad when it comes to buying shoes. They are my Achilles heel of shopping. Show me a cute shoe and I'm a goner. Uncomfortable? That's okay, I'll break them in eventually. Can barely walk in them? That's okay, I'll get used to them eventually. Too small? That's okay, I can deal. Too big? That's okay, a cobbler can fix that (and yes, I can a shoe repairman a cobbler - I'm old fashioned, sue me).

The thing is I am not okay with being uncomfortable, being able to barely walk, or wearing too small or too big shoes. I don't deal with pain well and more often than not those great shoes I bought get worn once by yours truly and then thrown in the closet to rot until next season when I give them another try. And that other try never goes very well.

And I will tell you why it never goes well. Here's the big truth: I can't wear heels. Yes, I said it. I cannot wear heels. They hurt my arches, they pinch my toes, and I look funny walking in them. I'm more of a flats kind of girl (which is unfortunate because I'm pretty short and could use the height).

Case in point, I once was in so much pain that I went barefoot in a really gross bar in the city. And then was asked to put them back on, which was way embarrassing. May I point out that I was very, very drunk and the shoes were still killing me. And to further prove that I can't walk in them, I once put a hole in WG1's toe with one of pointed heels (she still won't forgive me btw). Two very good reasons as to why I should be forbidden from wearing heels.

I hate high heels, but I could not be more envious of those girls I see walking around in the city in four-inch heels. They glide. They look graceful. They seem glamorous. They are the very opposite of me in my ballet flats from Old Navy (last season, but don't tell anyone). More importantly, stilettos to me scream Working Girl -- someone who is a force to be reckoned with, someone you can't push around. And this is why I cannot resist high heels. I want to a be taken seriously while wearing kick-ass footwear.

But then I put them on and remember that heels are just not my thing. I am a flats girl through and through. But it doesn't stop me from envying them - those graceful Amazons in heels stomping through New York City kicking ass and taking names.

Which is why I want to buy these and these and these.

Someday I will force my feet into a pair of gorgeous Prada pumps, walk through the halls of my office, and not feel the urge to take them off before lunch and replace them with Uggs. Someday.

But for now I will stick with flats.

Working Girl Wardrobe: Rainy Day

Weather Forecast for New York City:

Monday: Rain and thunderstorms
Tuesday: Partly cloudy with a chance of rain
Wednesday: Mostly sunny
Thursday: Few showers
Friday: Few showers

Since a higher being (or the effects of global warming) has decided to make the next few weeks of my life very difficult by soaking New York City with a minor flood, I thought it would be appropriate to write about what a Working Girl should wear in the case of a sudden downpour or just a smattering or even a light sprinkle of rain during her commute to and from the office using my new favorite website Polyvore.

If you couldn't tell from my little rant above, I'm not a huge fan of rain especially because I now live in the city. This ultimately means that on my way to the office the humidity will make my hair frizz, my pants will be soaked, and therefore I will be cranky all day long.

To avoid becoming cranky, a Working Girl needs to make sure she has three items in her wardrobe - staples that every Working Girl should splurge on to make sure she is safe from even the smallest drizzle.

A nice trench coat
The coat featured above is a Burberry Islington nylon trench that is unfortunately sold out (due to popular demand) -- not to mention very much out of my price range. But a good quality, classic trench coat is a must-have for any Working Girl. Not only does it keep the rain away, it is a timeless wardrobe piece that has never gone out of style. The look is not only very Holly Golightly in "Breakfast at Tiffany's" circa 1961 but also very Blair Waldorf in "Gossip Girl" circa 2008 (yes, I watch teen drama - don't judge). I snagged my classic khaki trench from Banana Republic on sale last spring so look for some good deals as spring turns into summer.

A snazzy pair of rain boots
Rain repellent galoshes are essential in keeping puddles in the streets where they belong and therefore off your pants and out of your shoes. There is nothing I hate more than having wet shoes/socks/feet all day at work. I know, not a pleasant visual. The rain boots featured above are both colorful and playful and will make a great addition to a classic trench. The ultimate, timeless pair of rain boots to have are Hunter boots from the UK. A way to make them more memorable? Try them in this lime green hue. If you're on a budget, try Target for more reasonably priced version of the classic Scottish wellies.

An umbrella (ella, ella, eh)
The most important of all accessories when preparing to battle the rain is having a truly invincible umbrella. An umbrella that deal with crazy throw-you-to-the-ground wind and can beat off sleet and even snow if need be. My vote for best umbrella goes to the "bubble umbrella" featured above. Not only will it not turn inside out if faced with extreme wind conditions, but it will also help keep your hair frizz-free since it creates a "bubble" over your shiny locks. Another definite plus to this umbrella is its price tag - $16.99 at Target.

My rainy day wardrobe almost makes me want the rain to stay a few more days. Almost.
