Queen of the Interns

On The Hills, Kelly Cutrone scared the crap out of me. Then, on The City, I decided I loved her because she was hardcore and hilarious.

In the clip below, I'm not sure how I feel about her. Kelly says, in the clip, that she's the patron saint of interns, that she made interning famous and that no one in the outside world knew what interning was before she was on MTV. I can't tell if she was joking or not. Either way, that's false.

I do agree with one thing though. She discusses that interns start working for her and believe their internships are going to be glamorous and then they become disgruntled when they learn they have to pick up heavy boxes or run errands. While I've experienced this with some interns, it's got to particularity true in the fashion industry where everything the public sees is oozing with glamor.

Kelly says that she always hires the "village girl," which she defines as the one who "stays late and helps clean up."

Interns don't necessarily have to stay in the office until 10 PM or empty the garbage cans but the ones who put in a lot of effort and go above and beyond at the ones who get noticed. Might be a good idea to listen to Kelly even if she is a little crazy.

You're right, I don't really know how to take her here. On one hand she seems out of touch with reality if she truly believes she made interning famous. But on the other hand, she does have some hidden good advice on how to be a good intern.

YAY for interns! I've done everything from iron clothes, wash dishes, pack up my bosses house to move, and show the world's creepiest man how to burn a CD (in his hotel room) and then some!

Not all interns are out for the glamour!

I would say that I have a healthy fear of Kelly too but I think she just has a nasty, bitchy attitude about everything. But she does make a lot of good points about interns. We have some in our office and I think in general the latest generation don't fully understand the grunt work you have to do

I think she's being totally serious. haha Well, maybe not totally. She laughs about it but then is like... but seriously, I made interning famous.

When I was an intern I worked my butt off. It made a great impression and ended up being worth it for amazing recommendations. My boss actually met a family friend on a cruise and she called me before the friend did! haha

This is hilarious, since I'm watching Lauren fire Stephanie on the Hills right this second. Kelly is a tough woman. She only takes the best.

I didn't really like her from the get-go, but after watching that video, I've decided she's just about as obnoxious as they come. Who is she to judge who knows fashion? Is she God? Didn't think so..

I'm totally with you on your first opinion of her. I initially didn't like her but she totally has grown on me. I think the best side of her is shown in her friendship with Whitney. She'll be hard on you but if she thinks you have what it takes and you show her, she can be an invaluable key to your success. I also don't believe that just because she has a rough exterior that she's not a good person, I think you just have to work harder for it and I believe if she were a man, she would just be considered a "go-getter". Anyhoo, I just discovered your blog and I'm loving it. Keep it up!

Kelly's kind of charming, I think! She's a much needed contrast to the girls on the show.
