In a Funk

Last night, shortly before 8pm I received this text message from WG2:

"i made it to chicago! woohoo!" it read.

I replied "yay! congrats! i miss you!" And then, I started crying.

My poor, unsuspecting boyfriend, had no idea why I suddenly broke into tears. I explained that I was upset that WG2 was no longer in the same place as me, not even the same time zone! He tried his hardest to make me feel better. Telling me that I could still talk to her on the phone and GChat. "It's not the same," I said through my snotty tears. "She's my person and she's not here anymore."

Lucky for him Gossip Girl was starting and I just snuggled in his nook and watched the show. But as I watched Serena and Dan discuss sleeping with their Snowflake Ball dates, I realized that not only was I missing WG2, I was jealous of her.

Tomorrow she's starting a new job. So exciting! New responsibilities. New people. New goals. Meanwhile, I'm in a job funk. Things are slow and I'm bored. Today, she moved into a new apartment. Much nicer then my current apartment (not to mention our awful Hoboken apartment) and for less than half of what we paid to live in the Hoboken Hell Hole. She's returning to family and friends and familiarity. My family is close and so are many of my friends, but sometimes it's easy to find yourself lost in the hustle and bustle of New York City.

Within a few days of WG2's departure, two of my friends have accepted new jobs in new cities. It's hard to see friends making big and exciting changes. As bored as I am at work, now is not the time for my to start looking for a new job and even though I tell my boyfriend everyday that we should move to Boston or Chicago or North Carolina, I know it's unrealistic.

I didn't think it would hit me until after the New Year that WG2 was really gone. It hit me and I'm not happy about it. Thankfully, I have the new Britney album to rock out to right now.

There is a bright side to your "funk." With WG2 moving and two of your other friends accepting job offers, it will force you to move outside your comfort zone. This means you'll have the opportunity to meet and network with new people. And of course, new networks can mean the potential for a future move. It also means you have an excuse to visit your friends who are moving on...and it also in some way serves as a motivating step for when you get ready to change your path. This funk will pass...but your friendships will stay the same.

It's a shitty time in life isn't it when everyone moves away for their careers.

Luckily for me, I was the first one to move away and left the other fools to deal with it.

I can totally understand how you're feeling. My 'person' moved to Australia a while back and I can tell you from experience - use the phone and gChat functions as much as you can. Although she's not physically there, nothing can separate the emotional bonds you have. Keep your head up, WG1. :)

The new Britney album is pretty good!

Hmm it's tough being in a funk. I sometimes feel the same way at my current job, but then there's always something new to learn, and interests to pursue outside of work (fashion, dance, etc.).

I'm used to saying goodbye to my friends, so I do understand what you feel. All we can do is to play Britney's new album and keep going.

Sorry lady! My friend may move back home due to the political cycle ending. It will get better plus you have an excuse to visit the windy city!!!

Luckily for me almost all of my closest friends live within a 15 mile radius of me, but I know it's hard when freinds move.

I get bored with work too, and believe me, because I've done it, moving cities for a job isn't always what it's cracked up to be. You work to live...don't live to work.

Don't fret! Before you know it, you'll be so busy, you'll look back and realize she moved six months ago. Plus, what a great excuse for a weekend getaway! Rush off to Chicago as often as you can just to say hi (the reality of needing money is irrelevant here). I say, plan a trip to go see her in the next month or two so you have something to look forward to. Stay strong! I know how much it just plain old sucks.

It's just so sad that the working girls are seperated =[

But hey! At least there will be visits! =]

And that means celebrating!

And, I totally wish I could give you a big hug right now!

Ugh I feel your funkness. My job is sucking right now and all my friends are at the very minimum 100 miles away (some even 3000 miles away) At least boyfriend watches GG with you. That's something to smile about :) XOXO

Change is never easy to adjust to...and having a good friend move so far away definitely will time some time to heal. You will always miss her, and it's good to cry it out from time to time, but you will eventually move on with life, because that is exactly what this is, LIFE...hang in there!

I know how you feel! I lost 4 of my 'work peeps' within a couple months - it's amazing how much brighter some people can make each day. But - just gotta make the effort to meet new peeps!

I am in the exact same situation. You should just try new stuff to get your mind off what you're missing. I moved home to be with all my friends and family, and then they all moved within three months. So I am all alone and know exactly how you feel. But at least you aren't single...

Chicago lures everyone's best friends away, I swear! It's holding mine hostage...

Hang in there, and I hope you find something to make your days more exciting.

If you would like a reminder of WG2, I posted the guest blog entry she did for me over on my blog today. I figured, what better time to do it than now?
Once again, I thank you both for taking the time to do it.

Your feelings make total sense...but you'd be surprised that some people would be envious of your stability and security.
But I say, Yeah, move up to Bahhston. I love it up here.

Last year my Bff moved to Cali- all the way to the other side of the country! I definately miss the stupid every day things we used to do together-spending hours at CVS, window shopping, lunching and gossiping-but I found that nothing really changed between us. Plus gchat and texting helped us to stay in touch and our rule was that we could call each other regardless time zones if need be. We also sent each other mail -thats the best part, when was the last time you received something that made you smile in the mail!!!

I have felt that way and it sucked. Whenever I get like that, it is an omen to me to make changes before they are made for me.
