It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year

It's hard for me to believe that only two years ago I was a senior in college, drinking studying my way through finals and then making the drive to Jersey to spend four weeks at home during semester break.

This is my second holiday season as a Working Girl. I still haven't felt like I've gotten out of the routine that has been embedded into my system since I was five: start school, fall break, school, Thanksgiving, school, Christmas/semester break, school, winter break, school, spring break, summer and start all over again.

Over the weekend, my boyfriend and I went to Massachusetts for (my first) Hanukkah and to visit his family and friends. I had Friday and Monday off and because the office has been so slow lately, I didn't feel the need to check in. It felt like a real vacation celebrating a holiday, having home-cooked meals and relaxing. With his brother and cousin home from college, I kind of felt like I was on break too.

My boyfriend, for the past two years, has taken most of his vacation during the month of December for this very reason. He likes to have his own semester break. While I constantly beg him to take some time off in late winter or early spring so we can go someplace tropical (because in my head we can totally afford that), I understand why he likes December vacation so much.

Next week, I'm using three of my vacation days and I'll be off for the whole week. Some other magazines at my company get the week off for free. Not us, our publisher loves to work. I'll go home, celebrate Christmas with my family and enjoy a mini-break from work. My own little semester break.

I just wonder if I'll ever get used to this lifestyle, working five days a week with only 15 vacation days (I'll go from 10 to 15 days in 2009). Something tells me that I may not.

I totally know what you mean. That's why I opted for a 3 day work week :-P

Vacations are what dreams are made of.

And then your alarm goes off and it's time to get ready for work.

I guess that's why there's Happy Hour; takes the edge off.

(Or brings the headache on. Whatev. Totally worth it!)

In England you have at least 20 days for holiday per year.
Way better than Mexico, which is only 7 :(

Enjoy your holidays

2009 will be my first year with 15 vacation days too. In the past I've always broken them up to take random long weekends throughout the year. In April I booked a full week off consecutively for the first time ever to go south and it was amazing...but sucked coming back because by about the fourth day in I was totally out of the work headspace.

WOW! I hope you have a great time!
One thing I love about Scotland is everyone gets major time off! My hubby gets 5 weeks paid vacation (his 1st yr in the company) and 27 sick days...not to mention all the company time off they take already...I always joke that he doesn't really work!

You'll get out of the academic year mode and you'll get used to 15 days per year. I promise! Just give it a couple of years.

I say you won't get used to it. I haven't and I have been working since 2003-then grad school/working-then back to working full time in 2006.

I do impose my own break/holiday system. Christmas and New Years - I take days off. My husband's birthday next year in March, we having a vacay to a tropical locale (and yes if you plan you can afford it). A day off in June for my birthday celebration, one in August for my wedding anniversary, and then a trip home during the holiday season or an excuse for college football.

You can get holidays/vacations to work for you.

Exactly why I switched from a marketing major to education... can't get rid of these breaks! haha. Well thats one of the reasons anyway!

I hear you! This will be my 8th Christmas season out of the "school system" and I still long for the automatic two weeks vacation I got for Christmas. The only perk now, is that work becomes the perfect excuse not to spend too much time at home. Love my family, but I moved 1500 miles away for a reason. ;)

Happy Holidays!

Hey!
15 vacation days? I don't envy you :-(. Here (Holland), when working fulltime you get 31 vacation days woohoo! Then again, we hardly have any bank holidays... I'm glad to read you've had a good time at Hannukah (sp?).
Enjoy the holidays! Merry Christmas!

Unfortunately, you do get used to the working world's vacation....and then you go back to school and get sucked BACK into having a month off to do whatever you want after finals. Sigh. This is my first holiday season back working after three glorious years of long holiday vacations during law school. It stinks.

Enjoy Hanukkah! I worked for a Jewish family during passover, and I loved experiencing the traditions!

I just wish I could have stayed until December to see it!

Any idea if you will convert? Are you guys serious?

(Love your blog!)
