So, Now What?

When everyday consists of eat, sleep, work, it's fun to dream about what would do if you had all the time in the world and could do that you loved.

Three weeks ago, my position at my company was eliminated and now I have all the time in the world. Prior to this big change, I was beginning to think about what I wanted to do next. I'd looked into wedding planning courses, reached out to local event planners and started applying for jobs, even had a few interviews. Through all of that, I kept asking myself, what do I really want to do?

Did I like what I was doing? Yes, but I was very unhappy. My unhappiness made me question whether or not I liked managing events and whether or not I was even good at it. I think I had this feeling because I knew this change was coming, by "knew" I mean "had a very strong feeling," and something just felt different every day at work for a few weeks.

Now that I have all this time, I'm thinking more and more about what I love to do. Do I want to start my own small event company one day? Do I want to focus on Working Girl and finally implement all the ideas WG2 and I have discussed for the last couple of years? Do I want to move to another city?

I love planning events and I'm ready to work on events for a new company.

I also love blogging and working on Working Girl. But that isn't paying any bills.

But while I'm taking the time to figure this all out, I'm applying for every event related position in New York that I can find. It's hard to feel like you have a ton of time and freedom when you've gotten your last paycheck and you're biting your nails waiting to see how many taxes will be taken out of your severance.

So sorry to hear that your position was eliminated. I guess the bright side is now you can do something new, whatever you want. Maybe until you get one of the event planning jobs, but extra effort into blogging which can give you a little revenue.

It seems several Working Girls are trying to find what they really want to do. I definitely say take the Working Girl blog as far as you can, because it's such a great blog. Who knows what could come of it? If you really like event planning, start your own business! You've got the experience. In the meantime, good luck in finding a job that you love and one that pays the bills! I'm sure you'll hear good news soon.

I am so sorry to hear about your position. But I definitely feel your pain. It happened me last summer, I've been freelancing since then, but it's not really paying the bills.

Good for you for taking the time to evaluate what you really want.

Dreams are fun, but they rarely pay the bills. It may not be glamorous, but it's a lot easier to feel content when you're not eating ramen and second guessing your decision to follow your crazy idea. The advice that people in my field always give to aspiring designers is, "If you can imagine yourself doing ANYthing else, do it."

Very sorry about your job! It'll be okay. I think you are already back on the career track. Good luck with everything!

We are in the same boat honey and I agree with you. Did I like doing events? Was I good at it? What do I really want to do?

I'm sorry about your job. I hope you find something that makes you happy. I know how you feel; one of the classes I was supposed to teach got cancelled, so I do have a little more free time, but I'd rather have been able to keep the class (even though it would've been a lot of work).
