He's Such a Swine

If there is one thing my company loves, it's memos. I seriously feel like we get at least 3 a week. Recently, it's been about wearing jeans to work, how to use the Internet appropriately, or the 5K that the office is running together next month.

This week though, it was about the Swine Flu.

I'm sure most of you know what I'm talking about - it's been all anyone is talking about these days - the Swine Flu outbreak that began in Mexico and has recently overtaken oh, how do I put this...ah yes, the WORLD.

Anyway, today we got an email from our company telling us that to "take the necessary precautions to help prevent you from becoming sick" and that if we did feel ill to stay home.

Now, I'm glad my company is being proactive about this, but really company?! Really?! I think this is just common sense. If you don't feel well, don't come hacking up a lung to work and spread the disease around to 5 more people. To me, this is a no-brainer. If you get sick, stay home otherwise half the company will be out the next week with your flu-like symptoms.

The memo also came with ways to prevent from contracting the Swine Flu. Among those included washing your hands frequently, staying away from those infected, and avoiding touching your nose or mouth. To which I can only say wow, thanks for the valuable information.

The president of my medical school sent out a similar memo. Yeah, my MEDICAL school. Because future doctors don't have the common sense necessary to keep from catching swine flu and are prone to not washing their hands and leaving dirty tissues on counters...

Even though all this information is quite obvious, our office still has people coming to work sick, making nasty hacking noises in their cubicles. I just looooove hearing somebody hack up their slime when i'm eating my lunch. I hear so many women leave the restroom without washing their hands. Um, gross! I walk around with a tissue paper in my hand, because there's no way i'm touching anything with my bare hands.

wow, im sure your life has been enriched with their informative memo lol

sadly some people do not understand the staying home if sick rule- how would they get attention if they keep their illness hidden...

Our company just sent out the same type of memo and I had the exact same reaction as you. Do we really need to be reminded to wash our hands and cover our mouths when we sneeze?! What are we, 5?

My company is doing the same thing. I have to make 20 "attention-grabbing" posters with bullet points about washing your hands, sneezing into your elbow, etc.

Totally common sense.

Well believe it or not, a lot of people need reminders I ahve at least a dozen coworkers that don't care if they get everyone sick they keep showing up, until my boss had to send everyone home at one point to recover from a simple cold (it went through the office for about 5 months because they would not stay home) so I don't think is that bad for your office to issue a memo with common sense issues (just rememeber common sense is not that common) I guess a simple email would be more than enough, but to each its own...

I work in a college in their fitness center... for some odd reason these sick people think it's a GREAT IDEA to come in and workout while they are sick. Sick + Sweat + sneezing on hands/wiping noses = EVERYONE GETS SICK... WHAT THE F*** IS UP WITH THAT?

I just got assigned to write such a memo for my company. I really want to make it not lame, but our SVP is panicked about it. Le sigh.

Unbelieveble!
The only reason the company I work for addresses the Mexican Flu is only because 'we' fly there directly from Amsterdam. There is no mentioning of washing hands and stuff like that.

You know, this is what has been bothering me with the prevention tips being given out by all the media. These are things you should be doing EVERY TIME you get sick, not just when it could turn into a pandemic.

i completely agree. i go to a university and we got a mass email that says "wash your hands everyday". as if we were elementary school kids running around on a playground for recess. how silly. haha. anywho, nice entry.

We have a note on our homepage to "learn more" about the virus. It also links to the CDC website.

Today we received an email from our president about it too. Ridiculous.

I get so angry when people come into work sick--have some respect! I don't need your nasty-ass germs!

I got a memo like that too and had a similar reaction. :)

Went to med school and did a stint for a public health org where we basically tried to teach people to WASH YOUR HANDS. Apparently common sense lags far behind our technological advances.

Oh, and my other pet peeve? people asking for antibiotics for viral infections. Just don't.
