Calling All NYC Working Girls!

I need a haircut in a MAJOR way. I haven't had a haircut since July and it's approximately 18 inches long at it's longest point. I know, I'm turing in "Horse Girl" from grade school.

Anyway, by the time I finally found a place I loved in Hoboken, I moved. And while I could go to Hoboken for a haircut, It's just so far away.

So, NYC Working Girls where in this great big city can I get a good haircut for a decent price? I don't need anything fancy. Few inches off, a few layers and my bangs (if I can still call them that) trimmed.

Hey there, Wendy here, and I just moved from Manhattan about six months ago. I finally had found a salon that I loved in Chelsea about 8 months before I moved. One of the hardest things about leaving Manhattan was leaving my salon. "Blue Sky Salon" is located in Chelsea approximately at 20-21st and 8th avenue. It is small and cozy, but they do an amazing job, and they are reasonable for NYC standards. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Make sure to tell them that Wendy says hello. ;)

TwoDo is on the West Side. Ask for Sasha. They REALLY know what they're doing, and take really good care of your hair. 78 bucks for a cut is a bit steep, but worth it here. And free bang trims! It's at West 82nd between Broadway and Amsterdam.

Sometimes Bumble and Bumble needs hair models for their students. That's kinda far, but maybe you can go there after work.

Vidal Sassoon on 56th street is great. About $100 bucks but the cut lasts a long time. I drive in from Philly to go there.

Seriously - find a paul mitchell school. I go to one in SF and its $20 and it is the best cut I've had here.

I go to Extravaganza Hair Design on 2nd Avenue between 61st & 62nd. Judith cuts and colors my hair and has saved me from disastrous hair before. Cut was $40, shampoo & blow-dry $30.

Holy Crap. I'm never going to complain about my hair cut costs again! (Apparently Ohio stylists, even in a larger city, aren't up to NYC standards) I keep mine short and edgy so it gets cut every 5 weeks. I thought I spent too much! I'm going to tip bigger next time! Hope you find a great place!

You need to go to Bumble and Bumble - When I lived in the city they were my go to salon and there is no place like them! I'm in Ohio now and every cut I've had sucks compared to B&B - it's worth the omney and if you can get in as a hair model you should! It's totally worth it!!!!

I live in Hoboken and don't know where to get my hair cut around here. Where did you go?

Heather - I went to The Beauty Parlour on Monroe Street. My stylist was Heather and she was great. WG2 went to Christopher and found him to be a little much.

Here's what I've discovered (I moved to the city in June):

The Aveda Institute will do a cut for $20-25, but they're students, so they're usually timid about anything too risky. If it's simple, they'll be great. And totally cheap.

Dramatics NYC (lots of locations) does $20 cuts for walk-ins: http://www.dramaticsnyc.com/services/index.html
I did this, and they did a fantastic job, but I only suggest it if you do well with A) not having your choice of stylist and B) not getting your cut styled before you leave. When I went, they washed and cut, then were done. It was fast, but it wasn't till I got home and styled it that I knew for sure it was actually good....very good, in fact.

There are plenty of good places outside of Manhattan if you're willing to make the trip. When I finally found an apartment months after moving up here, I ended up in Astoria (Queens) and have heard great things about a few stylists in this 'hood. They all fall in the $25 range.

In Hoboken, I used to go to Bangz (yes, with a z) which was on washington and 6th I believe - right by Bank of America. They are good for a cheap, cheap haircut and dose of Jersey charm.

WG1 told me to try The Salon which is all the way on Monroe and 6th - where my old apartment was located - and they gave me a great cut. I had Christoper as my stylist. He is odd...to say the least but my cut was amazing...but expensive. Apparently Heather is also great and cheaper.

Edward at John Barrett in Bergdorf Goodman is godly. I know you asked for a moderately priced person...but when you get your next raise, or want to treat yourself...go to Edward. First he cuts wet, lets it dry and then cuts it more...dry cuts are the wave of the future, but can only be done by the best professionals out there. He gives layers a whole new meaning (that is his specialty). He costs 150, but if you tell him your a single, working-girl, I guarantee he'll knock 20 off.
