Meeting Notes

Meeting Notes is a weekly feature. Here we will dish on tidbits, news, and important things we think you Working Girls should know. So scroll down to hear what we think you should glean from this work week.
  • Now that ELLE and the CW's Stylista is over we need a new women's magazine reality TV show. Marie Claire and StyleNetwork are giving us just that this spring. Scheduled to air for eight weeks, "Running in Heels" will debut on March 1st and follow three interns as they work with the Marie Claire writers and editors. Think Stylista meets The City.

Would you wear a skimpy outfit to work if you thought it'd help you get a promotion? According to the UK's Daily Mail, 27% of women would. Some other fun facts: 54% of the women polled believe dressing up helped them preform better at work; 63% have experienced wardrobe malfunctions; and 14% split their pants at the office.  The poll also named marketing and advertising profession as the most competitive for fashion rivalry.

  • Women have some a long way in the work place but it looks like we are still giving one another a hard time at the office. Earlier this week in the New York Times, leadership coach Peggy Klaus discusses female bullies in the work place. She says that while woman will help one another some have the mentality that they shouldn't help someone that could replace them.

How hard do you think it is to find a job in marketing in the next 6 months?

I'm a huge fan of the blog, since I'm a recent college grad who will be starting the job hunt very soon.

Office decor advice!

I'm a therapist, but I'm sure there's quite a few of us who have to set-up/decorate an office to meet with prospective clients.

Can you give us a DO and DON'T list? I'd be forever grateful! :)

I wouldn't wear a skimpy outfit just to get a promotion, I want to be promoted for my skills, not for my legs or my tata's!

I agree with dressing up a bit in the office really helps with your work performance.

But dressing sexy and skimpy? No way. I can just imagine bridget jones *shudder* that was a fiasco.

And also dangerous.

Hmm what would I like to see? I dunno... I like the blog the way it is :)

Hey Working Girls, I have a question for you: I just started a blog and I am wondering, what are some good ways for me to get my blog noticed? I'd really like some feedback, and to know someone is reading it. Do you have any advice?

How about - getting a job you love in your field? Any of us who have graduated last year could not have picked a better time in history to graduate, right? Its the worst!

Hard times for us. Regardless of how much effort you put into your college career it seems as if none of it has paid off when it comes to finding the first job.

Comments? Suggestions?

Over 300 job applications after moving to Chicago, and not a single call back (I'm a recent college grad too).

Any advice for a working girl who is getting discouraged and is at the end of her rope? Working part time at minimum wage just isn't cutting it (though I am thankful my part time seasonal job turned into a 'regular part time job,' it's not what I want to do).

Any advice or suggestions, or even just encouragement?

Dressing up for work TOTALLY helps, it changes your mentality. "As in, now that I look like such a proffessional, I'd better do a kick-ass job to back it up!" Unfortunately, I work in retail... and we wear jeans. And a hidious, ill-fitting t-shirt. Times are tough indeed.

I think some women do get competitive when another woman co-worker could take their spot. My ex-manager was like that and it was horrible!

omg! that is so interesting about the female bullies! Not that I have that problem, but I am one of three women who run our real estate office- the two other woman often have falling outs and I am often found right in the middle of it all with them demanding I choose a side. ack! makes my brain bleed sometimes.

but I agree with *Just Jen* I would never wear the skimpy skirt or dress to get ahead. I'm too classy for that!
