One of the Cool Girls

Every morning on the bus I see Working Girls on their Blackberries e-mailing their co-workers or playing Brick Breaker. Every morning on the bus I give those Working Girls dirty looks because I am jealous. When I see a Working Girl with a Blackberry, I think that she must be important and she becomes somewhat of a Working Girl Idol. "I want to be like her one day," I think.

Well, one day happened. Last Friday, I got a Blackberry and immediately felt more cool and more important. Every time I've pulled it out of my purse, I've felt like a powerful Working Girl. Now, I really shouldn't have felt this way because the only reason I received a Blackberry is for my upcoming business trip to South Africa. For one month, my personal cell phone has been replaced with a new Blackberry.

I oohed and ahhed over my shiny silver phone for the entire afternoon on Friday. I checked my e-mail over and over and over again all weekend. I'm finally making some progress on my Brick Breaker score. And now I'm sick of it. Every part of it (except for Brick Breaker). Sunday morning, it rang several times to notify me of a new e-mail. Why Sunday morning? Because apparently that is when American Express chooses to e-mail my company card transactions for the week (and my new bosses' and my old bosses'. I received A LOT of e-mail).

Last night after work I received an e-mail from a client telling me they get something approved by the time I need it approved (typical). Since I'm behind on this project already, having another setback put me in a frustrated and annoyed mood. I then took out my frustration and annoyance on my Working Boy.

Why don't I just not check my work e-mail? Because nothing bothers me more than having a number next to my inbox. And if I don't open it, it'll just make me more anxious and stressed about going to work the next morning.

Why don't I just turn the pretty little Blackberry off? Because it also serves as my personal cell phone. My LG Chocolate won't make calls or send text messages. I'm stuck with the Blackberry.

My boss saw me on Friday ooihng and ahhing over my Blackberry and she said that maybe after the trip, I could get a permanent one (that isn't also my cell phone). In some cases, like working events or assisting with a video or photo shoot that keeps me away from desk all day (this happened 3 times in my first two weeks of my marketing assistant career) having a Blackberry makes sense. But as fun a Brick Breaker is, I just don't think I want a Blackberry of my very own.

They don't call them CRACKberries for nothing. Crack is whack. Glad you caught on. Crackberry will detroy your life. I've seen it happen so many times with friends and fellow co-workers.

This is totally, totally how I thought I'd feel when I got my iPhone. Important and shiny and first and then overrated and annoying. But it has yet to get annoying. I'm an addict. It's sort of pathetic, actually...

That's my high-score on brick-breaker... and several hours of my life I will never get back.

Yeah, I seriously wish I was one of the cool girls with an iPhone or BlackBerry. Sadly, I still have my very old (and very beat up from being dropped in bars too often) RAZR. Not so cool.

And by the way, it's amazing that you're going to South Africa!

I love Brick-Breaker. It is so addicting. I don't have a blackberry but I play that game on my Dad's phone.

I agree that having e-mails constantly sent to you is really annoying.

I don't have a Blackberry but I was thinking of making that my next phone. I have a Sidekick now which I love but I hate that I have to use both hands to text (while I am driving...I know I am so safe LOL)

I've got one!! My BlackBerry is beautiful and I got it two weeks ago. It's amazing. I'm an internet addict and like to get my personal mail at work and can't on work PCs because everything's monitored. So I have my BB. It's pink and cool and everyone comments on how I'm a 'slave' to it.

And I named it Trixie. So there.

Glad you like yours though. It looks fantastic!

That's the same phone I have! And I've had it for a year now and don't really get the whole Brickbreaker obsession.

But working in magazines myself, I understand the importance of always being accessible by e-mail. HOWEVER, I turn the alert off so I only know if I have e-mail when I decide to go in and check it. I would highly recommend that approach -- it makes Blackberry life much more stress-free =)

Congrats on "becoming important"! ;-)

Oh you've definitely made a case against the Blackberry. I wanted one for the very same reasons (I also hate seeing a number next to my inbox! Must open right away! I don't understand the people who have like, 80 new messages in their inboxes, even if they're just spam - DELETE IT! Be gone!)

I still want an iPhone though...

I would be lost without my Blackberry, although there are times when I also want to throw it against a wall and laugh like an evil monster when it shatters into a million pieces. Those moments are typically when I'm on vacation and glance over at my beloved device only to find the number 200+ next to a yellow rectangle with a red asterisk next to it. Enjoy it while you can and try to get one for good! Just think, the girl sitting next to you on the bus will liklely ooohhh and ahhh at you with jealousy!

I'm the same way... Everytime the little envelope shows up, I have to open the mail. It bugs me too much not to. I work for a global company so I basically get email all day and all night because when I'm sleeping, our Australia office is working! It's almost a curse!

I felt the EXACT same way about the Blackberry. I had to have one. Now I am the girl on the bus you were talking about!!! And it feels... just like it did with my Razor. :)
